In the Tokugawa era (1601-1868), the term designated a professional warrior (Samurai), left without a master, either because he had been excluded from the clan due to his own mistake (and then declared an "outlaw", Hamon*) or because he no longer had work for him, or following the destruction of his lord's family (due to military defeat or imperial disgrace)
