Donatello's Marzocco Lion
The Marzocco is a work by Donatello (1419-1420) in pietra serena (135.5x38x60 cm) kept in the Bargello Museum in Florence. It was formerly located in Piazza della Signoria, where today, to preserve it from atmospheric agents, it is replaced by a copy.
The statue was commissioned by the Florentine Republic on the occasion of the visit of Pope Martin V to the city. It was intended to decorate the staircase of the papal apartments in Santa Maria Novella. It was later moved to the city square, as a symbol of the republic itself
In the Florentine Republic, the Marzocco lion was a symbol of popular power. This is a reproduction of Donatello's original statue.
