Franz Messerschmidt: "Heads of Character" - the Tormented Man - 19 cm
Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (1736-1783) was a German sculptor.
He is best known for his "character heads", a series of 69 busts (of the 100 originally planned by the sculptor and of which just 49 have come down to us) representing 64 grimaces.
